New Computer

Yes….it’s  here!  It has so many gadgets on it, my head is swimming!!  Right now I am listening to “Pandora Radio” – barbershop, no less.  It is a Dell Studio One…..with touchtone and a camera.  I am signed up with Skype so tomorrow I can skype Susie in New Hampshire.     Real fancy, let me tell you!!

That’s about all the news for now……think I will get myself to bed and rest up for a big day at the ‘puter tomorrow…..sleep tight!

Weather is here!

….Although this morning is cooler that I would prefer….My apartment gets mighty warm these days.  I have a nice ceiling fan as well as a portable fan but I am thinking I will need to acquire a portable air-conditioner.  They tell me I can get one on wheels that would work well in here.  I will definitely be looking into that!

It was a fairly uneventful week….Sunday I went over to Dian’s for dinner and we ended up going out for Sushi….I’m not a fan of Sushi but I liked the tempura and chicken teriyaki a lot.  Since Chris and Dian both ordered sushi, we sat at the sushi bar and it was absolutely fascinating to watch the guy at work.  He had a huge menu of sushi and quickly made everything.  I was enthralled with the whole thing.    I sort of got hung up on the fact that the various items didn’t seem to be refrigerated – he didn’t wear gloves – and he merely rinsed his hands rather than washed them thoroughly  during the process….and used the same towel to dry them rather than paper towels.  I’m not usually a fuss-budget about that stuff.   I guess I just noticed it rather than being bothered about it.   It was great fun!

Yesterday was a Hawaiian BBQ here in the building.  Our 80 year old manager loves to cook….and this time she grilled up beef, turkey and salmon burgers.  I had the salmon and it was wonderful.  There were lots of people there – more than at the potlucks.  I brought a fruit platter of pineapple, strawberries and cherries.  There were all sorts of dishes there – including deserts.   Boy I was full!  Got to know lots more folks.  We seem to know each other by our pet’s names rather than our own.  Fritz, by the way, has recovered nicely from his trauma and is back to barking at all the big dogs he comes across.  I wish he would give them a chance!  Particularly the dalmation named Fiona who is a sweetie – and scared of him.

Well…it is Volunteer day…so I’d best be getting in the shower and and get going here.

Monday – again

I have tried to post a blog two times now and have lost both literary gems….The third time is the charm, I hope……it’s Monday and I usually love Mondays.   Mondays  are a time to start anew…..I can destroy last week’s lists and start all over again.

Yesterday, Dian and I went to the May 17th parade in Ballard, to watch Brandon play and march in the parade with the Interlake High School Band.  They were near the last  units of the parade so we got to watch pretty much all of it.  I read in the paper this morning that May 17th is the date, in 1814 when Norway signed their constitution so Norwegians all over the world celebrate on that day.   I must say there were a lot of them in Ballard…..but if you’re a Seattle-ite you know there is a sizable community of Norwegians in Ballard. It was fun – and, of course, the band was really good (and classy) and the people watching was fabulous.  Afterwards we went to have dinner at Round Table Pizza with Marcia.

Thursday I needed to get some quarters because it was Bingo night so Fritz and I walked down to the nearest bank.  When we came home, we were just about on the apartment property when out of the house across the street came a medium sized white dog – Fritz barked, of course, and the other dog decided he needed lunch and got Fritz by the neck.   Poor Fritz cried like I have never heard before but he was mostly frightened.  No skin was broken.  The other dog’s owners were right there to pull him off and they were wonderful – very concerned!  Fritz spent the rest of the day, under the bed, under the stool., under a chair…or in my lap.  He seems fine now – but it sure was scary……Oh, by the way….I did not win at Bingo.

Mothers Day was a good one.  Jocelyn had brunch for us and then Dian and I went down to Southcenter to spend my 250.00 stimulus money.  Last stimulus I bought a vacume cleaner and put the rest to bills.  This time I decided I would do my part to shore up the economy and spent 240.50 on clothes!  It was fun – I felt patriotic!  When we got back I watched Jocelyn and Marcia build a vegetable garden – hauling bricks and dirt and bark and planting.   What a job….it is magnificent, I must say!

Have a good week everyone….I sure hope this one works!

Why?????

Can anyone tell me why a person would want to work with feet all day?   I went to the podiatrist yesterday and – lucky for him – my feet were clean and did not stink.   I bet he gets so doozies during his career.  Anyhow….he checked them over and poked little sharp points into them and when I didn’t feel any of those pokes he agreed that yes I did have the neuropathy.  So he made some models of my feet and will be making some inserts to wear.  Hopefully that will take the pressure off some areas and make it more comfortable to walk.  Next step will be orthopedic shoes – which are hardly cute – but I have gone long past cute so I guess that’’s okay.

There is possibly the cutest dog in the world living here in my apartment building.  He is a pom-shiatsu mix…he is white with brown spots…..he is 4 lbs and his name is Louie.   I have assured Fritz that he too is super-cute but Louie has stolen my heart.  Fritz need not worry, however…I would never over-throw him…especially now that he has finally learned to do his business outside.   He also protects me from bicycles, skate-boards, wheel chairs and buses – and bigger dogs.

I am getting a new computer!!  It is a Dell and I should have it by the end of the month.  I am so excited!!
The girls have been on me to get a new one for ages – so when Jocelyn offered to order it up for me I told her to go ahead – I KNEW they wouldn’t grant me the credit for it because I have waaaay too much credit  already considering my limited income.  Sure enough it came up approved and I am in business.  It is a touch screen, hard drive is in the monitor, has a camera so I can Skype….very exciting.

Happy Mothers’ Day everyone!!!

Let’s Hope this one works!

I wrote up a new post last Friday and it wouldn’t publish…Can’t remember why – I should have written it down.    Hopefully this one will go through!

Nothing much went on last week….We had fairly normal spring weather.  Yesterday the wind/rain storm was pretty intense for about 5 minutes.  By the time I went out to walk Fritz, it was just a light rain.  Today the sun is out again – hopefully for the whole day!

I just noticed that the spell check is gone from my ‘puter….hmmmmm!  I think I need a new machine…this one was acquired when we were in Seadside – so it is ancient as far as computers go.

On Thursday there was a sign up that Bingo was happening that nite – so, of course, I had to check it out.  They play five games at a quarter each and the blackout is 3 quarters.  The prize is, of course, the quarters.  They have little plastic quarter-holders.  We all have quarters ’cause we need them for the laundry machines….between Bingo and “C-L-R”, my quarter collection will be shrinking quickly.  Needless to say, I didn’t win at Bingo…but I had a good time and will, most likely go back.

Next Thursday I will be seeing a podiatrist for the first time.  My feet have diabetic neuropathy and are driving me nuts these days.  I strongly suspect I am wearing the wrong shoes….and that could be the cause of the various leg and lower back pains I have acquired lately.  I’ll let you know!

Well – here goes….if you are reading this, it worked……

This and that….

Boy, this week went fast.   I had to check all sorts of places to be sure it really was Friday this morning.

Last Friday, there was a potluck in the building….so I went.  There are really nice people here – but their cooking skills leave a bit to be desired.   There was ham, however and that was good!!   And, of course the desserts were too.  I sat with “Betty and Eddy” who are dear couple – he is severely handicapped and she is taking great care of him.  He managed to tell me that she babies him and she is his baby as well.  It was sweet.  They have been married 64 years.  He is obviously not long for this world and when he goes she will be sorely lost.   She seems to get him out a lot – which is good.

Sunday, we had the April birthday celebrations at the Olive Garden in Lynwood.  Steve’s birthday is the 20th and Jocelyn’s the 21st.  I have been furiously working on their gifts but didn’t get them done….so I brought them for them to see….I am doing cross-stitch items  which I had started years ago and never finished.  Steve’s will be a wall hanging showing the 12 days of Hawaiian Christmas and Jocelyn’s will be a picture of Santa Claus at the ocean – barefoot and holding his shoes….both will be spectacular when I get them done….I’m working’ on it!!!

Wednesday was the Volunteer Appreciation reception at the hospital.  Last year it was a luncheon at the Museum of Flight….this year it was at the James Tower Education Room….Obviously they had to cut costs…but it was still really nice and enough food I didn’t need dinner that night.  Hey…can’t beat that!

Last night there was a sign up announcing “C-R-L”…at 6:00 PM…..so I had to find out what the heck that was… Turns out it is a dice game played  with special dice with those letters on them.  Starts out with three quarters and you roll the dice and whatever comes up you distribute your quarters either to the right (R) or left (L) or into the center (C)…..when everyone has lost all their quarters to the center, the last one with any quarters left, wins the kitty.   I didn’t win. There’s also a dot on the dice and if you roll that you don’t have to give up any quarters. It certainly didn’t tax my brain…..but I am getting to know the folks by going to these things……and that is good.

Time Flies!!

I can’t believe a whole week has passed since the last posting…..and a busy one it was, too!!

Easter Sunday, Jocelyn and Dian and I went to Bingo….the morning session….and…..winner, winner, chicken dinner!!!!   I won $500.   Since we always share the winnings, I kept half and  they divided the rest.   I cannot tell you the last time I won at bingo!   Anyhow, we, of course, decided to drop in at the nearby casino on the way home…..and I didn’t win there – although the girls did…Came home and off to Dian’s for a wonderful dinner and finally home again,.    Needless to say, I was mighty tired that night!

Tuesday was volunteer day and my regular partner is still out sick, so the new one is driving me nuts.   I don’t know if she is normally dense or mentally ill, but she is very difficult to be around.  It makes for a very long 4 hours!

Wednesday, the bus came to the building and we headed out for a trip to Lucky Eagle casino….I managed to contain my losses to $25 which I figured was pretty darn good!  While I was gone,  I decided to take Fritz to the groomer who was across the street.  I had heard she was pretty good…and she surely was convenient……she was wonderful…He could pass for a show dog.  and – BONUS – she was extremely inexpensive!   Only $31.50 (after my 10% senior discount)   Normal charge is in the $40-$50 range.

Yesterday, :I volunteered again – in the morning.  It is a lot busier in the morning, that’s for sure.  My partner this time was a dear 91 year old lady who couldn’t seem to figure out the phone system.  She was sweet to work with, though.

Today I MUST clean the apartment….change the bed….do the laundry…try to finish the birthday gifts coming up (don’t think I’ll make that one)…..get groceries….get my nails done….busy, busy, busy!!!  I also got a jury summons yesterday – so I will call them to see if it makes a difference that I no longer live in Seattle…sure hope it does!!

Settling in…

Well, I have been here around 10 days now and still loving it!   There is a lot of traffic noise out the windows, tho’  I expect I will get used to that.  Across the street is the tattoo parlor and the comings and goings there are interesting.  Especially the lady with the fuschia automobile and hair to match.  I think she must work there because she is there every day.  The fire engines are quite busy as well.

I walked over to the library and registered there – and borrowed some books.   It is a city owned library – I had thought it was a King County library, but it isn’t.   My Tivo sent me messages that they wouldn’t be recording any more, which confused me since I signed up – and paid for – lifetime membership.  So I called and discovered I would need to re-register with my new zip code and phone number…So…I then discovered I need it to be hooked up to the telephone line….but I didn’t have a long enough line to run to the nearest phone jack – so off I went to Fred Myer and the nice man told me what I needed and I actually DID IT!   So now I am back in business with Tivo!!   I was quite proud of myself….I only made two panic calls to Dian which was amazing.

Played pinochle twice and won big time the second time.  It was a fun time – and I am getting to know the folks.   Some of them have been here a long, long time….since the building opened 14 years ago.  This seems to be the last stop before assisted living or skilled nursing care.

Next Wednesday I will be going on the Casino Bus to the Lucky Eagle Casino in Rochester.  It should be fun….

Yesterday I had my 6 month visit with the oncologist….and all seems fine in that department!!  He is so nice..spent a lot of time reminiscing about Mort…he really like him.  Thus we all like HIM..

Guess that’s it for now.  Happy Easter, everyone!

Here I am!

…in my new place!  So far I am loving it.  It is so much easier – and safer – to walk Fritz.   and people actually speak to me when they see me – a novelty I didn’t seem to enjoy in the last place.

Yesterday I went down to play pinochle…I was pleased that I remembered how to do it – it had been a long time since I last played…maybe even since we moved up here from Seaside!  After the game, the lady who used to live in my old place right above us was there and she started to fill me in on the “goings on” at the old place.  I have never figured myself for a dense person but, if she is to be believed, a lot of dodgy stuff was happening every day that I didn’t know about.  She said she was badly molested on the elevator….she said the old men would call in prostitutes in the evening…..she said they removed the lobby furniture because the old folks bladder problems happened on it…..she said there was sex going on in the stair wells.  She also said there was human feces in the stair wells.   I DID see that once – but it was outside – not inside the building.  My old “friend” Johnny also said the sex was going on  but I didn’t believe her.  I am hesitant to believe this woman also….I am going to be careful around her, I am thinking!  She is the same woman who threatened to call the police when Mort accidentally got off on the 5th floor instead of the 4th and tried to get into her apartment.   She didn’t refer to those incidents at all and I didn’t remind her either.

But all that aside…..I love this new place.  The people are really friendly and welcoming.  They do a lot of stuff…they knit twice a week, play pinochle twice a week, the Avon lady comes twice a month, they have movies every Sunday evening, Casino trips once a month, a scrap-booking class this afternoon, go out to lunch once in a while as well as dinner.   That’s all I can think of off hand.,  I signed up for the casino trip and will play cards once a month – so far that’s plenty of activity.

Last evening Fritz and I found our way to the Library across the street…have to go down the path across the Cedar River and under the street.   It will be easy.   I will try to get there this afternoon and sign up.

My knees are giving me fits again   One of the ladies here said she was going to wait until the pain woke her up at night before she decided to do something about it.   that sounds good to me.  I did take a pain pill this morning, however, and it makes me feel fuzzy – and I don’t like that.  But the pain is lessened…I DO like that!
